The Vernal Wee Babies of 2022
Let me introduce you to the latest warren of lambswool, angora and cashmere that just sprung out of my hands.
I was just mentioning today on Instagram that I started making Wee Baby Bunnies back in 2010. My, my. How time flies when you are having the time of your life, making dolls and making friends!
As I have repeated many times before, the first Wee baby bunny was for a dear friend’s young child. I posted photos of this ‘present’ on my old blog, and lo and behold: requests started pouring in.
I gingerly started offering bunnies here or there, as I encountered magnificent sweaters ready for a second chance in life.
Then we made bears, cats, foxes, deers, reindeers, caribou and even lambs.
It seems that the love for these soft and cuddly dolls never ends. They are extremely simple and maybe that’s part of their big charm.
They are also sort of the gateway for many of my doll collectors. They start with a Wee Baby doll and before you know it, they have fallen in love with one of the larger dolls and are bringing them home too.
I couldn’t be happier to still be making bunnies to be honest.
They bring me such good memories, when my girls were little and we would throw in a movie while Mom stitched away little ears and feet using many beautiful repurposed sweaters.
I found this yellow one, made of 100% lambswool, last Fall. I immediately knew what I was going to make with it. I still have quite a bit left, so maybe you will see more yellow bunnies in the Spring of 2023.
Yes, unfortunately this is it for bunnies this year. I normally only make them in the Spring. Not that it is Spring in Canada, but I know many of you are already cutting flowers for your dinner table, so for now I only dream of Spring via the making of these hoppity friends.
I am planning on making a few bears and maybe some cats in September and then deers in November. But…as is usual wit these busy hands, I make plans and the dolls have different ideas.
I try to at least have two wee baby families per year, though sometimes that is not feasible. Last year I only managed to have some adorable foxes for you, but I sincerely hope to remedy that with some more baby uploads this year.
You can find the Wee Babies of Spring 2022 available for sale in my shop. Unfortunately, though I really wanted to, I couldn’t manage to make extra Baby Carrots to be sold separately. All the baby carrots are about 3” tall and made with cashmere and stuffed with wool.
If you missed the bunnies and would like to make one yourself, you can purchase the Dollmaking e-book in my pattern store. Just remember to find a beautiful sweater, suitable for becoming a fuzzy bunny doll.
Best of luck welcoming the Spring this year. May your boots be full of mud, your fingers full of dirt and your smile very wide.
