Indigo In Her Winter Dress
Miss Indigo wanted a pretty winter dress, aside the velvet one I made her, so we went diving into the fabric stash and she chose this beautiful print by the brand Liberty of London. I think she has great taste, don’t you?
We spent a few days designing her dress. Always very important questions that must be answered by each doll:
- What colours do you want in the dress?
- Is it going to be flowy or heavy?
- How full do you want the skirt? twice full, thrice full, four or five times full?
- High-waisted, low waisted?
- How about the sleeves? what length?
- Do we do set-in sleeves or raglan?
- Do you want a lot of volume to show off the fabric, or you want them more tailored so you can wear other items atop your dress? (especially important for coats, you see?)
- Are we using accents? buttons, lace, pockets?
- How long do you want your dress? for fluffy twirling and rather short? to cover your knees if you get shy? Long and luxurious?
- Do you want it fully open at the back or with a midway seam for more modesty?
- What type of collar or neckline design do you want? a square, sailor, peter pan, round or sport with knit ribbing?
Each doll responds differently I am afraid. That’s why I can never more than one outfit at a time. That’s why I have to make individual choices all the time.
I could never pre-sew underwear or dresses or even shirts.
Even when I work in collections and want the dolls to have a theme and somewhat the same outfits, we have to sew unique items for each.
One wants a different length to the skirt, or different type of sleeve, or no collar while the others beg for one.
It’s a bit maddening but it’s also loads of fun to see the dolls choosing for themselves and letting me know what they want as I work on them.
Miss Indigo chose navy blue merino tights. Her dress has a merino collar, accent wooden buttons, a very full skirt. So full the dress stands by itself!
It is now my job to give her a real good feast before packing her up in her sweet box and send her across the country and border to her new home. I sure hope she has a fast journey because she likes to eat a lot. She is going to be so hungry when she gets home!
Thank you so much to her Mom, for giving me the chance of making Miss Indigo for her. I hope you and the other dolls welcome her with open arms!
I shall be back later this week with a little peek to another sweet custom doll. For now, I hope you are starting a beautiful week. See you soon.
