A Butterfly Dress for Ella
Ella’s mom requested a sundress. I was happy to oblige as making flowy dresses is a predilection of mine.
Since Ella liked turquoise, we tried to jam as much of the colour as possible, and then added a butterfly appliqué because why not?
This dress was made using repurposed and new, cotton and line fabrics. It has nice striped ties at the back, a very sweet short yoke, or should we say empire bodice?
The sleeves are what I call “flutter” sleeves (I actually made a tutorial for Patreon on them, quite simple) and then we chose some of our special bicolour buttons.
It has a very dramatic A-line with a mini hem. It’s as puffy and gorgeous as Ella wanted it. Then of course we had to crochet some summer shoes to match.
I remember the first time I made a doll for her, she asked for ‘cap sleeves’. I wasn’t even sure what that meant, but I had fun drafting a pattern for them and ever since cap sleeves have been quite a joy to create. I was very tempted to give her dress cap sleeves again but decided these flutter ones would look much better.
Every single time I make a doll with cap sleeves I think of her. The same way every time I hear a woodpecker up in the trees…or I leave a dress without ironing.
I left the backdrop of Ella’s photoshoot quite wrinkly, as it seems her mother has an aversion to iron clothes. How fitting I thought. Also, I know she would get the joke. Every time she posted a photo of the dolls wearing wrinkly clothes I would give her heck for it.
I used the same fabric of her little sleeves, to sew her underpants. Ella has a very pronounced belly and bum, and I wanted to give her very comfortable underwear that would not pinch her waist and that would fully cover her.
I think I succeeded, right? If you want to find out my very easy way to sew underwear like Ella’s, you can check out this free tutorial.
So that’s it for her summer ensemble. A bit tropical for northern Canada, but very perfect for the misty coast she will call home.
Instead of posting a blog with seven hundred photos, I decided to split it into 3. So expect another final instalment of her clothing tomorrow.
I hope you have a great Saturday. I am going to shut down the computer now, get my knitting needles (I am working on a new knitting pattern), light the wood stove and watch the little snow fall outside.
See you tomorrow.
